A Local Student Has Been Chosen to Represent Girlguiding

Lucy Farrar, a Year 11 student at The King’s School, part of Pontefract Academies Trust, has beaten 100’s of other applicants to become a National Advocate for The Girl Guides. Advocates are a group of Girlguiding members aged 14 to 25 that lead the advocacy and research. They act as Girl Guide spokespeople and represent the voices of girls and young women, talking to MPs and other decision-makers, speaking to the media, going to events, and more. Children In Need

On Friday 18th November, we celebrated Children in Need across all eight of our schools. Staff and students raised money with various activities including bun sales, toy sales, sponge the teacher, drop the ball, performances, a non-uniform day, and more! Our students gained more understanding about how their fundraising will go towards supporting children and young people living in poverty, providing emergency support to families in crisis, providing comfort to children feeling sad, lost and alone, helping children overcome social injustice, and supporting children to feel safe and secure again. Pontefract Academies Trust Invests in Outdoor Learning and Play

Pontefract Academies Trust is delighted to announce that they have invested a substantial amount of money into outdoor learning facilities for De Lacy Pontefract Primary School. Children and staff are now able to take advantage of state-of-the-art playground equipment which includes planting areas, den making apparatus, and textured multi-coloured flooring to help heighten the senses and encourage creative play. The brand new areas also have an outdoor stage for performances, waterplay equipment designed to help strengthen problem-solving skills as well as bird and ladybird boxes to study their local natural surroundings and wildlife. From Pontefract to Representing Yorkshire

After only 5 years of playing Badminton competitively, Eva Hursthouse, a 14-year-old student at Carleton High School, part of Pontefract Academies Trust, has been chosen to represent Yorkshire in the under 16s category. Eva trains at Pontefract Squash club between 2-5 times a week and all sessions are an hour and a half long. Training sessions for Yorkshire are 2 hours long. The selection process to be chosen to represent Yorkshire was a tough one. Individuals were put forward for trials in York where they trained for over 6 hours. Over 350 Pupils and Staff from Orchard Head Junior, Infant & Nursery School Have Walked 16 Miles to Raise Awareness of the Motor Neurone Disease Association

Pupils and staff from Orchard Head Junior, Infant and Nursery School held a fundraising event to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease Association. The school community have walked 15 miles over the last 3 weeks (a mile a day) and yesterday held an event for the final 16th mile. The reason for walking 16 miles was due to this being the distance between Orchard Head School and Headingley Stadium, where Rob Burrow, a parent of the school and local sporting legend, spent most of his rugby career. The Rookeries Junior, Infant & Nursery School are Making Music Accessible for Deaf Children

Wakefield Music Education Hub has secured funding to run a new project called Vocalise at The Rookeries Junior, Infant & Nursery School in Pontefract. The project provides an opportunity for The Rookeries deaf children to be involved in music. Phil Needham, Principal of Wakefield Music Education Hub in collaboration with Danny Lane, Artistic Director of Music and the Deaf have secured the funding through Holly Hock Charitable Trust and have agreed to fund a West Yorkshire Music Programme. Local 9-Year-Old Receives an Award From the Mayor

George, a 9-year-old from Carleton Park Junior & Infant School part of Pontefract Academies Trust, has been awarded a “Mayor says thanks” recognition award for fundraising over £1,750 for children’s mental health charities and for continually giving up his own time to litter pick in his local area. George was nominated by a local councilor who first saw him when he was completing his 100-mile walk in lockdown as part of the Captain 100 challenge. Pontefract Academies Trust Secondary School Students Delivering Phenomenal Results

Carleton High School and The King’s School, both a part of Pontefract Academies Trust have achieved incredible performance in their 2021/22 GCSE Examinations, as verified by The Department for Education (DfE) performance tables published in October. The Department for Education’s Progress 8 performance tables showcase that Carleton High School and The King’s School students achieve half a grade better per subject than the national average of other students with the same prior attainment. The initiative, led by the Mental Health Foundation and recognised by the World Health Organisation, is held every year on the 10th October. Walk for Rob

Orchard Head Junior, Infant and Nursery School are holding a fundraising event to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease Association starting in the week commencing the 10th of October. Most of you will already know that this is a charity that means a lot to the school, not least as a result of one of our parents, Rob Burrow MBE, having been diagnosed with MND in December 2019.
